??????Coronaviruses, named after their crown-like shape, were first identified in the 1960s and are associated with a range of respiratory symptoms. Cases such as Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) can cause aggravated symptoms in humans and can lead to pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and death1,2?. SARS-CoV-2 (formally known as 2019-nCoV) is the latest coronavirus strain to be identified. ??
Chinese scientists identified the novel coronavirus as a group 2B CoV, distinct from the SARS-CoV3,4,5. Genome sequencing demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) shares 79.5% sequence identity with SARS-CoV and 96% of identity with a bat coronavirus6.
To access host cells, coronaviruses attach to specific host cellular receptors via the spike protein7. Thus, SARS-CoV utilizes angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE-2) host cell receptor whereas MERS-CoV uses CD26 (DPP4)8. The results of several recent studies suggest that SARS-CoV-2 can use the same cell entry receptor, ACE-2, as SARS-CoV6,9,10.
